CHILD’S PLAY

Anna Lewis

Hop scotch, skip rocks, hide and seek too

Bat and ball, marbles were all fun for us to do

Fishing on the rocks was always the plan

And we were sure to be home

Before the sun hit the sand.

Dilly trees, mango trees and plum trees too

Became our secret hide away

We had so much to do

From box carts to cork boats

We never had idle hands

Sun up, morning came

And we couldn’t wait to play in the sand

Those were the days

Though few may remember

We had each other’s back

And we always stuck together.

There were no cell phones

No tablets that kept us occupied

We learned to dwell with nature

And made images from the clouds in the sky

Skip rope, street races have become

A thing of the past

But in my mind these games

Will always last.

Ring play time as we rhymed

Kept us active

These were the games we played

That kept us distracted

From negativity, fighting, just to name a few

Instead, our imaginations grew and grew

Because the fun games of life

Were all that we knew.
