S. Major
S. Major’s journey as an author began in 2017 when she volunteered with the Refocus Support Program in The Bahamas, helping troubled youth. Inspired by God, she started writing impactful stories for them, leading to over 130 high-interest, character-focused tales addressing issues like bullying, substance abuse, courage, and more.
With over 20 years of experience with struggling readers, Major knows the power of engaging content to motivate youth. She launched a successful reading program at A. F. Adderley High School (1985-1990), significantly improving literacy levels. She continued her mission at C. R. Walker Secondary School, merging techniques with other teachers to enhance students’ reading skills.
In 1992, Major established a homeschool and after-school tutorial program, which helped her own children, and many others improve their reading skills. After selling the business in 2011, she trained a successor to continue the work.
Her volunteer work at Bahamas Against Crime led her to train community members as reading instructors, addressing the link between illiteracy and crime.
Major, who enjoys working with youth, reading, writing, and traveling, was born and raised in Nassau, Bahamas, and has two adult sons and two grandchildren.
Her book, "Alphabet Adventure Reading: Overcoming Your Challenges Is As Easy As ABC," features seven stories that offer solutions to real-life challenges for teens and young adults. It is now available in paperback and eBook on Amazon.com and Barnesandnoble.com and at select stores in The Bahamas. Ms. Major believes that her published book is a great resource for teachers, parents, counselors, and youth workers, geared to promoting character-building and positive change. The book includes prayers, scriptures, comprehension activities, and a glossary for learning.
