Big Adventures with West Indian Flavor

Children deserve stories that help them recognize their own world—and discover life beyond it. Our featured authors share the warmth, creativity, and rich storytelling traditions of The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.

For young readers with Caribbean roots, familiar voices and island settings can create a special connection. For others, these books open a window into different places, cultures, and experiences. Either way, a good story gives children plenty to explore.

Stories That Encourage Young Minds

The right book can start a conversation that matters. As you read together, talk about a character’s choices, ask what your child might do differently, or explore a new word.

Along the way, stories encourage children to consider other perspectives, think through problems, and express their ideas. Meanwhile, lively adventures and memorable characters give them a reason to turn the next page.

Whether you want a bedtime read, a classroom read-aloud, or a chapter book for an independent reader, explore titles that match your child’s interests and reading confidence.

How to Choose a Bahamian Children’s Book for Your Young Reader

A familiar island name, a character who sounds like someone your child knows, or an adventure close to home can spark an interest in reading. Bahamian children’s books give young readers opportunities to recognize their world while discovering something new.

But how do you choose a book your child will enjoy—and want to finish?

Look Beyond the Age on the Cover

Start with the suggested age range, then look inside. Children of the same age often have different reading skills, interests, and comfort levels.

Read a page together. Can your child follow what happens and understand most of the words without frequent help? For independent reading, look for a manageable challenge. A more demanding book might work well when you read aloud together.

Consider the content, too. A child may read the words easily but feel unsettled by intense suspense, loss, or difficult family situations. Check the description, sample pages, and reviews for clues. When possible, ask the author about the intended audience and themes.

Picture books can appeal beyond the early years, while a confident younger reader may enjoy chapter books. Let your child’s readiness guide you.

Follow Their Curiosity

Does your child love animals, boats, funny characters, or solving problems? Begin there. Offer two or three suitable choices and let them pick.

Explore Bahamian and West Indian authors whose stories introduce familiar expressions, places, and experiences. Then branch out together. Reading can offer both the pleasure of recognition and the excitement of discovery.

Make Room for Reading

Create a comfortable spot with good lighting and books within easy reach. You don’t need a special reading room—a chair, a cushion, or a quiet corner will do.

Turn down the television, put phones aside, and choose a time when your child isn’t overtired. Even a few relaxed minutes together can make reading feel like something to enjoy.

Read with expression, welcome questions, and resist turning every page into a test. Ask what made them laugh or which character they liked. If a book doesn’t connect, try another.

Explore the authors and books above, and let your young reader help choose your next shared adventure.

When You Finish the Book

Keep the conversation going. Ask your child what they enjoyed, which character they remember most, or whether they would recommend the story to a friend.

Then consider leaving an honest review on Amazon. Share what worked for your young reader and anything other parents might find helpful when choosing the book.

You can also help your child send the author a short message through their public social media page or author email. A favorite scene, a thoughtful question, or a simple “We enjoyed your book” can mean a great deal. Handle the contact yourself and keep your child’s personal information private.

Your feedback helps other families choose their next read and lets authors hear from the readers they write for.
